The Trabia Tallarita Sulfur Mine Museum, located in the heart of the gypsum-sulfur plateau of central-southern Sicily, is located on State Road 190, which connects the municipalities of Riesi and Sommatino, and is bisected by the Salso River. The mine hosts an interactive and educational exhibit comprising five sections: – the shaft access simulation, with stops at the tunnels, allowing visitors to virtually enter the mine; – the mine pavilion, featuring a multimedia space; – the Tosi engines, animated and accompanied by stories; – the scientific exhibits, including laboratories dedicated to electricity; – the timeline tracing the most significant moments in the history of sulfur in Sicily.

Riesi: a wine town with a rich mining history

It is one of Sicily's most important wine regions, with a DOC that produces red, rosé, white, sparkling, and passito wines. The Trabia Tallarita mine was the beating heart of the economy for decades; today, the remains of the mine are considered an example of industrial archaeology and a tourist attraction, with an adjoining museum that tells the story of the site and the miners' work. The past and present are deeply intertwined, with an identity rooted both in the land and its fruits and in the memory of mining, which still profoundly affects the social and cultural fabric of the town. The city has a history tied to faith and devotion, which is reflected in its traditions and numerous religious events.
