It is known for its beauty, shaped by waves and wind over millions of years, and for having served as a setting for many famous films, with its white marl walls. This page contains all the information about the Scala dei Turchi. The Scala dei Turchi has an undulating and irregular shape, with gentle, rounded lines rather than harsh ones. The rock is pure white, a color that, as we will see, is due to the particular type of minerals present.
Located along the southern coast of Sicily, Porto Empedocle boasts not only a fascinating history but also splendid beaches and breathtaking landscapes. Founded in 403 BC by Greek colonists under the name "Emporium," the city was subsequently occupied by the Romans and then by the Arabs, who left indelible traces of their dominance, both architecturally and culturally. Its strategic location has always made it a highly coveted territory, and for this reason, in the late Middle Ages, the city was known as Marina di Girgenti, the marina of the city of Agrigento, a hub of trade and commerce. In the mid-16th century, to protect this important commercial port, an ancient tower was restored and made part of the coastal warning and defense system. The seaside village of Marina gained independence from Agrigento only in the mid-19th century as Molo di Girgenti, and then changed its name to Porto Empedocle to commemorate the famous Agrigento philosopher Empedocles.
